COURAGEOUS ADVOCACY

COURAGEOUS ADVOCACY

As a school, we take part in fundraising for many charities; local, national and international and we share this on our Charity Display Board. To see our Fundraising totals, please click here

The Church of England define Courageous Advocacy as follows :-

Courageous Advocacy - By way of a working definition, when using the term ‘courageous advocacy’ we are referring to the act of speaking out against an issue of injustice, often on behalf of those whose voice is not heard. Speaking out, at whatever level this takes place, requires an element (and sometimes a great deal) of courage! Becoming a courageous advocate for change, therefore, must involve being informed about an issue and it must move beyond simply knowing, to saying and doing. Educating for courageous advocacy must embody an ethos of action-taking, challenging injustice and becoming agents of change in the transformation of ourselves, our relationships and our communities from the local level to the global. (from Church of England Courageous Advocacy Caroline Weir)

Children in Need

Every year, like many schools, we raise money for Children in Need. We usually dress in spots and stripes. This year, Class 3 asked Mr. Jones if they could organise something extra to raise more funds. So they decided that with help from Mr. Banks (our Sports Coach) they would do a fun Run / Obstacle Course. They set up different activities for older and younger children, and everyone took part, contributing a little extra to the funds for CIN.

Our Spots and Stripes day raised £135 and the Fun Run raised an additional £135 making a "Spotacular" total of £270.

Toilet and Tap Twinning

In Class 2 we looked at the Goals of the Cop 26 conference.

The children had been looking at the work of  John Snow in his discovery of the link between cholera and dirty water, and were shocked to find that there are people alive today who don’t have access to a toilet or clean sanitation.

They decided they wanted to do something about this focussing on Goal 7. (Clean water and sanitation)

Annalise and Alan all suggested getting them toilets and Oliver suggested clean water.

This led us to look at what we could do to help. We investigated Toilet Twinning and watched a really informative video of a man in Nepal talking about how his life had changed since he’d built a toilet for his community. (https://www.toilettwinning.org/why-60/)

We discussed how £60 would make a real difference. As there were 20 people in Class 2 (including adults) we decided that we could each contribute £3 and sponsor a toilet. The children then wrote persuasive letters asking their parents / grandparents for £3 and presented their work in an assembly “making a difference, one toilet at a time”. Mrs. Stokes and Mrs. Dobbs also wrote to their parents who were so impressed that they also supported the project.

The children became so enthusiastic about this, that they decided that they wanted to twin more than one toilet and so the “Toilet-o-meter” was devised. It hoped to twin not just one, but all the toilets in school.

The enthusiasm of the children was so infectious that within a very short space of time, all 5 toilets in school had been twinned with additional monies coming in to twin toilets in the wider community.

The highlight was the arrival of the certificates and putting them around the school.

Latest Update!

The Toilet Twinning Charity put The Harrogate Soroptomists in touch with us. They

were submitting a bid to make Harrogate and District a Toilet Twinned District and wanted to use our toilets total as part of the bid which we were really happy to do.

As a result of this and other toilets that have been twinned in the area, Harrogate has now been officially granted the status of being a Toilet Twinned District.

Class 3 also became very enthused about Cop 26 and discussed what they could do. As the children discussed their ideas, they decided that they would use the same charity, but would twin a tap in school. They raised enough funds to twin not one, but two taps and were thrilled to receive their certificates.

Supporting Ukraine

Following on from our Class based Acts of Collective Worship where we discuss global issues, the children wanted to do something to support the people of Ukraine.

Class 1 and Class 3 wrote letters to Mrs. Dobbs and delegates from Class 2 had a meeting with her.

Across the school, the decision was unanimous - to wear blue and yellow and bring a donation.

Their amazing efforts led to us raising £369.67

Following on from the success of the Blue and Yellow Day, our parents asked to hold a cake sale. This raised a total of £216.44 taking the total to £586.11.

Then we recorded the Song For Ukraine  and this raised £200 giving us a whopping total of £786.11!
